International Education Spotlight: The Gambia

The Gambia has roughly 2.2 million citizens. I had the opportunity to live and work in the beautiful country for about a year. The people are wonderful, and it deserves its title, “the smiling coast!” But, what is the international education scene? Let’s take a look.
Education System Overview
The Gambia mandates nine years of pre-high school. High school is another three years. The academic school year is from September to June. The subjects required are English, math, science, social studies, and elective subjects. The WASSCE (West African Secondary School Certificate Examination) is the school leaving exam.
University System Overview
The top fields of study are law, business, and science. Four years of study are required for most fields. The Gambia offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
International Education Snapshot
In 2021, there were about 210 Gambian students studying in the U.S. About 30 U.S. Study Abroad students were in The Gambia.
